A new adaptation, co-production of CBBC, ZDF, and Netflix premiered in 2017. A TV series based on the book aired from 1998 to 2001, and has inspired two spin-offs, Weirdsister College, aired in 2001, and The New Worst Witch, aired in 2005. In 1986, the first book in the series was made into a television film of the same name. The books have become some of the most successful titles on the Young Puffin paperback list and have sold more than 5 million copies. The first, The Worst Witch, was published in 1974 by Allison & Busby, and the most recent, First Prize for the Worst Witch, was published in 2018 by Puffin Books, the current publisher of the series. The series are primarily about a girl who attends a witch school and fantasy stories, with eight books published. The Worst Witch is a series of children's books written and illustrated by Jill Murphy. The covers from the first seven books, shown in publication order Ireland had first been invaded in 1169 it was now 1845, yet she had been neither assimilated nor subdued. The opening paragraph made the author's sympathies clear:Īt the beginning of the year 1845 the state of Ireland was, as it had been for nearly seven hundred years, a source of grave anxiety to England. After only a few pages, it was obvious this book went against the prevailing orthodoxies about the Famine, which lay at the heart of the revisionist interpretations. Reading that book proved both heartrending and enlightening. The second suggestion came not because he liked the book-he did not-but because he believed it was the only comprehensive narrative of the tragedy that had made extensive use of archives in Ireland and England. He then informed me that I should first read Cecil Woodham-Smith's The Great Hunger. In the late 1970s, when I was embarking on my doctoral research, my supervisor at Trinity College Dublin told me that I must extend my dissertation on the Poor Law in Ireland, 1838–45, to include the famine period. He tells a great, wide-ranging, philosophical story and yet subtly underplays his role and his dedication to whatever he does. It’s as much a story about Phil’s personal and geographic journey as it is about what it takes out of a senior team to strap yourselves to a rocket like Nike.Ī friend texted me this morning and suggested I read Shoe Dog (that’s number 4!) When I said I had just finished it, and how incredible the story was, she replied that she’d found Phil Knight so humble in the way he tells his story. Nike was born of a love of running, and strong knowledge of accountancy and a roomful of Buttfaces… I couldn’t have been further from the truth. If I’d had to guess at Nike’s story prior to reading this book, I’d have guessed at a well-funded company run with an iron fist and a founder with a strong marketing pedigree. It’s not a “famous face” brand like Microsoft or Virgin. I might have been able to name Phil Knight at a push but knew nothing about his journey. Nike is one of those ubiquitous brands that I have happily worn but knew nothing about it. Shoe Dog is the exceptional memoir of Phil Knight, co-founder and creator of Nike. When 3 different people are kind enough to recommend the same book to you in less than a fortnight, you’ve got to read it. I don’t believe in book banning or censorship, but this really tested my limits. It’s no wonder the book was banned in America (Wikipedia link) for 30 years. When you add in the stream-of-consciousness I’m surprised I even got through the book. I can’t even pretend it’s hard to say why I didn’t like this book, it really was just too much sex, misogyny, sexual assault and crass language. It also counts toward my Classics Club list so yay for that too! The only thing I can truly say I’m grateful for is that I got it off my shelf where it’s languished since the 2010 Boston Book Festival (it was the last one!). The amount of raunchy sleazy descriptions in Tropic of Capricorn, if possible out weight those in the first novel. Seriously, I was in no way a fan of this book. I didn’t think it was possible, but I liked this one even less than Tropic of Cancer. This randomised, controlled, open-label platform trial (Randomised Evaluation of COVID-19 Therapy ) is assessing multiple possible treatments in patients hospitalised for COVID-19. We evaluated the use of a higher dose of corticosteroids in this patient group. Low-dose corticosteroids have been shown to reduce mortality for patients with COVID-19 requiring oxygen or ventilatory support (non-invasive mechanical ventilation, invasive mechanical ventilation, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation). He fended off evil spirits in the brief battle against Apophis with a powerful aura. These penguins, when discovered, were wearing King Tut masks. In the Battle of Brooklyn House, he summons a squad of penguins, which are quite effective as the magicians who were sent to Antarctica seemed to be terrified of them.įelix had summoned several penguins while raiding the gift shop with his fellow trainees as Carter and Sadie were outside. When the three headed snake attacks Carter and his other trainees, Felix takes off his left shoe and throws it at one of the heads. He is very curious and questions Walt after the older magician accidentally disintegrates the shabti. In the lesson, Magic Problem-Solving 101, taught by Carter, Felix uses a basketball to make a shabti lose its balance and shatter into pieces. He also tries to start singing "Happy Birthday" when Sadie mentions it's her birthday, but no one joins in. When she tells her dream to the rest of the initiates, Felix asks if they were all going to die when the others were afraid to ask. Sadie notes that he loves penguins and had transported a winter wonderland including penguins into the Brooklyn House fireplace. When Felix first arrived at the Brooklyn House, he was the youngest child there, at age nine. |
